Crete must-do´s
Crete doesn’t ask to be loved – it just is. A rugged paradise where ancient myths lounge beneath sun-drenched skies, and where every bite, breeze, and backstreet tells a story older than time. It’s not just Greece’s largest island – it’s a character in its own right, with moods, secrets, and quirks you’ll want to discover slowly, like a glass of homemade raki sipped under a fig tree.
So, what exactly must you do on Crete? What experiences are so essential that skipping them would be like flying to Italy and forgetting about pizza? Buckle up (and maybe loosen your belt), because we’re diving into the must-dos that make Crete unforgettable.
Must-Do while on Crete
- Get lost in Chania’s old town (on purpose)
Let’s start in Chania – a city that wears its history like an embroidered shawl. Venetian walls, Ottoman balconies, Jewish quarter, Egyptian lighthouse … every corner whispers, every stone remembers.
You’ll get lost. You should. That’s the whole point.
Stroll the maze of cobbled streets lined with bougainvillea-covered houses and curiosity shops selling everything from olive oil soap to handmade knives (yes, knives – it’s a Cretan thing). Sip a freddo espresso by the Venetian harbour, people-watch, and let time slow to a Mediterranean crawl. Visit the old mosque-turned-gallery. Walk the breakwater to the lighthouse. Or do none of that and just wander.
2. Eat like a Cretan (often and well)
Cretan food doesn’t whisper. It sings.
It sings of olive oil, wild herbs, sun-drenched vegetables, and proud grandmothers who guard their recipes like state secrets. If there’s one island where eating is both survival and ceremony, it’s this one.
Here’s your edible itinerary:
- Dakos – Think bruschetta’s earthier cousin: dried barley rusk, soaked slightly, topped with tomatoes, feta or mizithra, olive oil, and oregano.
- Kalitsounia – Small pies filled with cheese, greens, or herbs. Some are sweet, others savory, all addictive.
- Antikristo – Lamb cooked slowly over an open fire, in the most primal, mouth-watering way possible.
- Snails – Yes, snails. Called chochlioi bourbouristoi, they’re pan-fried with rosemary, vinegar, and oil. Don’t knock it till you’ve dipped your bread in the sauce.
- Loukoumades – Golden dough balls drizzled with honey and cinnamon. Basically, Greek donuts sent from the gods.
- And of course, raki – a clear, fiery spirit you’ll be offered more often than directions.
But remember: here, meals are not rushed. They are long, loud, and joyful. Embrace that.
3. Hike the Samaria Gorge (or at least pretend you tried)
If your legs don’t ache by the end, did you even do it?
The Samaria Gorge is Crete’s answer to a full-body reset. Located in the White Mountains, this 16-kilometer hike descends through jaw-dropping scenery, steep cliffs, pine forests, and narrow passes like the legendary “Iron Gates” – where the walls close in to just a few meters wide.
It’s no walk in the park, especially in summer, but the payoff is huge: fresh mountain air, ibex sightings, and the tiny village of Agia Roumeli at the end, where the sea is your finish line. Take a dip. Drink a beer. Your knees will thank you tomorrow. Or curse you. One of the two.
4. Swim in waters so blue, you’ll think someone turned up the saturation
Let’s talk beaches. Crete doesn’t mess around.
Forget uniform strips of sand. Here, every beach feels like its own planet.
- Elafonissi: Famous for its pink-tinged sand and shallow turquoise waters, it’s where Instagram dreams go to live.
- Balos Lagoon: Reachable by boat or a fairly rough hike – either way, the view from above is a religious experience.
- Seitan Limania: Tucked between dramatic cliffs, this narrow cove looks like Poseidon took a knife and carved out a secret.
- Preveli: A palm forest meets a river that flows into the sea – tropical vibes, Cretan style.
Pro tip: go early or late. The magic lives in the quieter hours, when the crowds haven’t arrived or have just left, and the sun turns everything to gold.

5. Visit the Palace of Knossos
You can’t come to Crete and skip Knossos
That’s like visiting Egypt and ignoring the pyramids.
Knossos is the ancient heart of the Minoan civilization, which thrived here around 2000 BC and mysteriously vanished. Enter a labyrinthine world of grand halls, colorful frescoes, and the throne room of a forgotten king. It’s said to be the inspiration behind the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth – part truth, part fantasy.
But here’s the twist: much of what you see is reconstruction. British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans took a few creative liberties (read: a lot), so Knossos is part fact, part theatrical reimagining. You’ll be amazed, sceptical, enchanted – and that’s exactly the point.
6. Feel the spirit of the mountains
Crete’s coast may steal the spotlight, but the soul of the island lives in its mountains.
Drive into the White Mountains or the Psiloritis range, where the roads narrow and the goats outnumber people. Stop in tiny villages where grandmothers in black wave at strangers and the air smells like thyme. Have lunch in a taverna that doesn’t have a menu – just a smiling host who asks if you like meat and red wine. Say yes.
Up here, time bends. You’ll hear tales of resistance fighters, vendettas, and how to make your own cheese in a cave. It’s Crete unfiltered. Raw. Real.
7. Step into a monastery – and maybe find something you didn’t know you were missing
Whether you’re religious, spiritual, or just curious, Cretan monasteries have a presence. Built like fortresses, they are quiet sanctuaries filled with incense, icons, and echoes of chanting.
Try the following:
- Arkadi Monastery – Symbol of Cretan resistance and a hauntingly beautiful place.
- Preveli Monastery – Perched above the Libyan Sea with views to calm the most chaotic soul.
- Toplou Monastery – Wine, olive oil, and art all under one sacred roof.
Take a moment. Light a candle. Sit in silence. It’s a humbling experience – an emotional palate cleanser.
8. Dance (especially if you think you can’t)
Cretans don’t ask if you dance. They assume you will.
Whether it’s a village festival, a wedding, or just a spontaneous gathering at the local taverna, music and dancing are stitched into the island’s DNA. The lyra – a pear-shaped fiddle – leads the charge, and soon feet are stomping, hands are clapping, and strangers become temporary family.
Join in. Don’t worry about the steps. What matters is the joy. The abandon. The freedom to move even when you’re completely off beat.
9. Find your own myth
Crete is the birthplace of Zeus. That alone should tell you something.
The myths of the island aren’t confined to dusty pages or museum plaques – they’re alive. Hiding in the cracks between stones, in the wind that rushes through the olive groves, in the eyes of the old man who sells you honey on the roadside.
Maybe your myth is a sunset you weren’t expecting. Or a conversation that makes you rethink your life. Or a quiet moment, standing on a cliff, wondering how the world ever got so complicated when this view is so simple.
Whatever it is, let it find you.
10. Leave – but never completely
When it’s finally time to leave, part of you won’t.
You’ll be back at your desk or walking your dog or scrolling through yet another to-do list, and suddenly, the smell of oregano or the sound of bouzouki music will hit you like a wave.
Crete stays. In your senses. In your stories. In the way you now linger over lunch and look strangers in the eye a little more often.
Don’t just visit Crete – let it visit you
You can check off sites and snap your photos. Or – you can surrender.
To the rhythm. The chaos. The warmth. The mystery.
Because Crete isn’t about doing. It’s about being. Being full. Being present. Being a little sunburned, a little tipsy, and a lot happier than you expected to be.
So go. Eat the food. Chase the myths. Swim in the sea. Dance like a Cretan. And let the island write itself into your story.
You won’t regret it. Not for a second.
Remember, you have YOUR BASE on Crete and we look forward to hosting you!
